Instruction
Students will
transition
through the following stages as developmentally appropriate.
Stage I:
For incoming students.
Students receive one-to-one
individualized instruction for majority of the day.
Individualized
programs based upon each child’s developmental needs are created and
provided in a nurturing environment.
Our philosophy is to construct a teaching
environment that maximizes the child’s success and minimizes failures.
This is accomplished by breaking down
concepts to teach skills that are appropriate and socially accepted.
As the child masters each skill, he or she
builds upon those skills to achieve the next level of learning.
Each child receives a program tailored to
his or her individual needs.
The remainder of the day consists of opportunities for group activities,
socialization, generalization of acquired skills, and specials with age
appropriate typically developing peer groups. Even when in such
collaborative environment the individualized help for each child is
maintained through trained instructors.
Stage II:
For students who have
completed Stage I and/or are developmentally ready to be integrated into
a typical preschool environment with peers.
Stage III of the program consists of increasing
the number of hours/days spent in the regular classroom where they
become an active member of the classroom. The ‘shadow’ continues to
assist the student when needed but fade back the support when the
student is developmentally ready to learn from the classroom teacher and
classmates. The ultimate goal is complete independence in the classroom
without additional support.
During this time students also continue to
receive one-on-one instruction within the Pria program when not in the
regular classroom. Services will also be available for students who are only interested either in the one-on-one instruction or participation in an inclusive classroom with a ‘shadow’. |
